Shawn “Jay Z” Carter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith present FELA! World Tour
FELA! tells the story of Nigerian musician and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the father of Afrobeat music. It is set at the historic Shrine, a venue where Fela performed regularly. The Shrine was also a refuge for the underprivileged and a stage where Fela voiced his protests. Fela Kuti was inspired by his mother, a civil rights activist. He used his music as a tool to bring his country, filled with oppression and corruption, together as one. His activism and opposition to military dictatorship landed him in jail several times.
When you see FELA!, you will understand why it is the winner of three 2010 Tony Awards for Best Choreography, Best Costume Design for Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical. The beats are uplifting and will have you on your feet, especially when Fela says “everybody say yeah yeah”. The costumes are colorful, the dancers are talented and you will feel as if you have been teletransported to Nigeria to have an authentic musical and historical experience.
Fela Kuti died in 1997 from an AIDS related illness.
