10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Japan!

10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Japan!

I have returned from a whirlwind trip to Japan with a group of 15 for Culinary Travels trip #10!

We visited Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka over 10 days. I thought I would share several tips for anyone going or planning a trip to Japan. Some of these are surprising but important to know.

#1 Always Carry Socks

No matter where you’re going in Japan, always have a pair of socks with you. You may be asked to remove your shoes at temples, restaurants, traditional buildings, and even some restrooms when you least expect it.

#2 Keep Coins Handy

Vending machines are everywhere, and water costs about 150 yen ($1). Many machines don’t accept foreign credit cards or cash, so carry coins.

#3 Don’t Eat While Walking

If you buy food from a street vendor, stop and eat it there. Japan discourages eating while walking (it may be illegal lol), and public trash cans are surprisingly hard to find even though the cities are clean.

#4 Let the Weather Decide When You Go

Spring and fall can change from cool to warm to rainy in a single day. Summer is extremely hot and humid AND they get snow even in Tokyo in April. Pack layers and choose your season wisely.

#5 Learn a Few Japanese Phrases

Even basic greetings go a long way. Most locals are helpful, but English is less common than many travelers expect.

#6 Stay Near Markets & Train Stations

Choose hotels close to major markets and transportation hubs to save time and maximize your experience. The train system is very efficient and the markets have fresh produce, restaurants & shops!

#7 Convenience Stores Are Your Best Friend

Family Mart, Lawson, and 7-Eleven are great for everything! Snacks, meals, drinks, toiletries, and forgotten travel essentials. And they are open early and late!

#8 Shop at Don Quijote

Japan’s famous discount store has everything from souvenirs to skincare to lingerie to liquor. Expect crowds, narrow aisles, and long checkout lines. it is your one stop shop and they do package the items in duty free bags.

#9 Wear Comfortable Shoes

You’ll walk far more than you think. Attractions often require lengthy walks from parking areas and train stations, sometimes uphill.

#10 Wait to Book Mount Fuji

If seeing Mount Fuji is a priority, check the weather first. Cloud cover can completely block the view, even from nearby areas like Hakone.

10 tips on things I wish I knew before visiting Japan

Fun Bonus Tip

Bring a Small Plastic Bag
Japan has very few public trash cans. A small bag is perfect for carrying wrappers, cups, and other trash until you find a place to dispose of it.
