Theater Story: Porgy and Bess & Audra McDonald!

I will admit. Over the years when I have heard reference to “Porgy and Bess”, the word opera never came to mind. But the truth is Porgy and Bess is an opera first performed in New York City in 1935. The music and lyrics are by the famous Gershwin brothers and it was based on the novel by Dubose Heyward called “Porgy” which was later turned into a play. The novel, play and opera all portray African-American life in the 1920’s in the fictitious town of Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina. It tells the story of “Porgy” who is a disabled male beggar, “Bess” who is a female struggling to be free of her dangerous lover “Crown” and the local drug dealer named “Sportin Life”. At the time of its debut in 1935, the entire cast was made up of classically trained African-American artists. In 1935!  What a feat! Besides the fact that some critics felt it was a racist portrayal of African-Americans, Porgy and Bess struggled to be recognized as a true opera. However, it is now widely recognized as such and performed worldwide.

Porgy and Bess has had several revivals including in 2006 at the Savoy Theatre in London. The latest revival took place in 2012 on Broadway in NYC and premiered in January 2012. It is directed by Diane Paulus with book adaptation by Suzan-Lori Parks. Does her name sound familiar? If so it’s because Suzan-Lori Parks won the Pulitzer Prize for playwriting in 2001 for “Top Dog Under Dog”. It is also no surprise that when it came time to casting a leading lady for “Bess”, the production team chose Audra McDonald. She can do no wrong. She is an actress and singer who has won four Tony awards for Best Featured Actress for both plays and musicals. The rest of the power cast includes Norm Lewis as “Porgy”, Philip Boykin as “Crown” and David Alan Grier as “Sportin Life”.

Like many revivals, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess of 2012 was in many ways more relatable than its original 1935 production. While the story of the fictional Catfish Row essentially remained unchanged, the production appeared streamlined with a modern day sentiment. Mind you it still chronicled the life of “around the way” gal Bess shacking up with crippled Porgy- or to be politically correct “disabled” Porgy – after her abusive, no good, poor excuse of a man Crown commits murder. Another standard is the stylish, yet sleazy, Sportin Life who slimes his way through town, controlled substance in tote, preaching of life’s abundance in Harlem. However, the revival relayed the story in a more approachable fashion with much less of an operatic feel but with the same amazing musical score.

Given its modern day approachability, which encompassed paired down lyrics, shorter, shuffled scenes, as well as Porgy trading his goat cart -which he used in the original production to get around -for a leg brace and a cane, this revival I am sure  appealed to a younger audience. Particularly one that is not well-versed in the historical nuances of the original. However, what remained unequivocally clear is the fact that Audra McDonald (Bess) has an amazing voice and an undeniable presence that simply consumes the stage and will prove breathtaking for audiences old and new.

McDonald’s performance aside, the reasons for critical acclaim are readily apparent. You simply don’t get 10 Tony nominations, including that of Best Revival of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Norm Lewis), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Audra McDonald) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (David Alan Grier), if you haven’t done something exceptionally right. Yes, Porgy and Bess has indeed been “revived”!!

6/8/14 Update: Audra McDonald makes Broadway history with sixth Tony Award win for her role as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill! Congratulations to her for such a stunning performance and a tremendous career thus far! Did you know this Broadway superstar was actually born in Berlin, Germany but raised in Fresno, California? Or that she is married to a fellow Broadway performer currently starring as Javert in Les Miserables? Or how about the fact that her pre show ritual is to be very quiet and not speak reserving that time for herself? Read more here.

I’ve seen her live! Last summer she did a recital in Baton Rouge and it was one of my birthday presents to myself! She is truly amazing. I’ve seen a handful of live Operas in various cities, but Porgy and Bess is still on my to-see list!

I am so jealous! I am so tempted to fly to NYC to see her!

  • Because of the earthquakes, I have not shared information about Turkey in a while. It was so devastating@to hear the news after spending time there in December. I continue to pray 🙏🏽 for everyone affected. Consider making a donation. I did to @doctorswithoutborders
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But I did write 2 travel guides on Istanbul based on my trip there with @goturkiye. One is a comprehensive guide on Istanbul with information on luxury hotels, restaurants, shopping, museums, and my favorite neighborhoods. The other is a Turkish food guide. I was on a culinary trip, so as you can imagine, I ate it all!! You can find both at thesophisticatedlife.com
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now if you are a shopaholic, beware of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul! It has EVERYTHING your heart desires! I have never seen so many different stalls, from ball gowns to ceramics to sportswear. I bought myself a beautiful leather purse and was tempted to buy so much more. Credit cards and Turkish lira are accepted.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As far as the Spice Bazaar, the aromas were captivating. I enjoyed just looking at the array of spices and sampling Lokum. There is a long swift line for purchasing packaged Turkish coffee, so have your lira ready!

  • BLACK-OWNED WINE BAR IN LONDON!
***Save for your next trip to London! If you are in London-check it out this weekend!

Did you know the actor, DJ, humanitarian etc etc @idriselba is also the co-owner of a wine bar in London?!!

@portenoirekx is a cozy wine bar in the Kings Cross neighborhood which is a major rail hub filled with cool restaurants and shops on a canal. Perfect for a romantic evening!

The wine menu is extensive! Red, white, Rose, Orange wines, Wine on Tap, and my favorite-BUBBLES! There also have Cocktails.

I decided to try one of their wines-the Porte Noire "Vintage" Blanc de Blancs Grand cru 2010-100% Chardonnay from Champagne, France for 19 pounds per glass, 119 pounds per bottle. It was fresh, crisp, radiant..

The menu is limited but unique. We had the Sourdough with "Umeboshi butter", Charcuterie plate, Mushroom arancini with sun dried tomato pesto, roast pork belly with tamarind glaze and "peanut sambal". WHOA. Such an extraordinary combination of flavors!! And for dessert we shared the burnt matcha cheesecake!

As I walked around my mouth dropped open at the wine cellar collection!

These are the experiences I would like to share when you join me on @culinarytravels_thesophislife Sign up for my newsletter to get all the info!

  • ***SAVE FOR YOUR NEXT TRIP TO NAPA!!
During my trip to Napa for the @blackvines_ weekend of events I stayed at this luxury Black-owned Bed & Breakfast in downtown Napa! @mcclellandhouse

It was AMAZING! I have been to Napa several times including last year & didn’t know it existed so I’m so glad Black Vines introduced me to it!

We spent 4 nights being pampered. The main house has 5 bedrooms with their own bathrooms and each had their own theme. Our bedroom and bathroom were HUGE and more like a suite. It was the master. There is also a separate house w a bedroom and bathroom that sleeps 4. Some of the rooms have terraces 😍😍.

We had breakfast every morning made fresh by a chef and he even took recommendations 🥞 and we had delicious mimosas 🍾🍾

The location was ideal. You can walk to the shops & restaurants downtown.

There was also daily housekeeping services. Parking right in front of the house. Easy access to the house. Living and dining room lounge areas. Tea & coffee in the room. Hermes lotions and soaps…

I would love to go back next year with a group for @culinarytravels_thesophislife Who is coming with me?

  • If you are going to Whistler BC, here are some essential packing tips! These tips can actually be used for most ski resort areas in Canada and the US. Here is a tip-Early spring AKA as the “shoulder season” is a great time to go skiing.
It’s less crowded, less expensive, warmer weather!
I went to @gowhistler and stayed at @fairmontwhistlr in April last year and it was perfect!

Back to packing tips:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Layers, layers, layers: Make sure to pack plenty of layers to keep you warm and comfortable on the slopes. This includes thermal base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Ski equipment: If you’re bringing your own ski equipment, make sure to pack skis or snowboard, boots, poles, helmets, and goggles. If you’re renting, double-check the rental equipment options at your destination to ensure availability.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Accessories: Don’t forget to pack essential accessories like gloves, mittens, a hat, neck warmer or balaclava, and hand and feet warmers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Apres-ski wear: After a long day on the slopes, you’ll want something comfortable and warm to change into. Pack comfortable shoes or boots, warm sweaters, and pants for lounging around the chalet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Sun protection: The sun can be strong at high altitudes, so don’t forget to pack sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses or goggles with UV protection.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6. Personal items: Pack your essentials, such as toiletries, medications, and any other personal items you may need for your trip.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
7. Travel documents: Make sure to bring your passport, visas, travel insurance, and other important documents.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
8. Backpack: A backpack is essential for carrying water, snacks, and other essentials while you’re on the mountain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
9. Camera: Don’t forget to capture the amazing scenery and memories on your ski trip. Bring a camera or smartphone to take pictures and videos of your adventure.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
10. Emergency kit: Lastly, pack an emergency kit with first aid supplies, a flashlight, and extra batteries, just in case.
