Things to do in Atlanta Georgia for Black History Month.

Atlanta Georgia Black History Month

things to do in atlanta for black history month, ebenezer baptist church, black churches in atlanta

Are you looking for a list of things to do in Atlanta Georgia for Black History Month? Most of Atlanta and the state of Georgia is on a high right now and for good reason. For the first time in almost 30 years the state went “BLUE” in the presidential election and voted for democratic nominee President Biden and Vice President Harris. Then, in January, we elected the first Black senator from the state. Reverend Dr. Raphael Warnock from Ebenezer Baptist Church. This is the same church that Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. and his father preached at although in a different building across the street. We also elected a Senator with a Jewish background-Senator Jon Ossoff.

Atlanta Georgia is known as the “cradle of the Civil Rights Movement”. Between 1940 and 1970 Black leaders congregated in Atlanta fighting for voting rights, education and employment opportunities. These leaders included former Congressmen John Lewis and former Atlanta mayor and United States Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young. Atlanta provided the infrastructure of Black churches, Black-owned businesses and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU). Therefore, there is no shortage of things to do in Atlanta Georgia for Black History Month.

Here is a list of things to do in Atlanta Georgia for Black History Month for all ages from kids to seniors.

Things to do in Atlanta Georgia-Museums:

National Center for Civil and Human Rights: This is not just a regular museum. Their website describes it as a museum AND a cultural institution that connects the U.S. Civil Rights Movement to human rights challenges today.

Apex Museum: Established in 1978, this museum has been in existence for 42 years. It is Atlanta’s first and oldest Black History Museum. Its mission is to help all Americans and international visitors understand and appreciate the contributions of Africans and African Americans to America and the World.

High Museum of Art: The High Museum always has a great collection of African-American artwork. In the first quarter of 2021 check out “Dawoud Bey: An American Story”. His photographs chronicle Black life in America for 45 years starting in the 1970s.

Atlanta History Center: The exhibit “Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow” allows you to examine historical artifacts, photographs and art for 50 years after the Civil War during the fight for Civil Rights in America.

Sweet Auburn Historic District:

John Lewis Mural on the corner of Jessie Hill Jr. Drive and Auburn Avenue.

Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History (AARL): The collections in this library are dedicated to the study and research of African American culture and history and other people of African descent.

The Municipal Market in Sweet Auburn (The Curb Market): Save up your appetite for this amazing food hall with Southern specialties.

For Keeps: A Black-owned book shop and reading room for rare and classic Black books located on Auburn Avenue.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Sites:

Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. Monument “Hope Moving Forward”, Downtown Atlanta near Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This is a new monument by a Jamaican sculptor.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park including the visitor center, The King Center, Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Freedom Hall and his birth home are currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, LIVE virtual group tours are available Wednesday through Friday. Contact Rebecca Karcher at [email protected]

Consider attending church service across the street at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Home to our new senator Reverend Dr. Raphael G.Warnock

Atlanta History Tour: King Historic District Tour: This tour is given by one of my favorite companies in Atlanta. They also do virtual tours and food tours (pre pandemic).

Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBCU):

Morehouse College: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. attended Morehouse College as well as fellow civil rights leader Julian Bond. It is a liberal arts college for Black men that was founded in 1867.

Spelman College: Spelman is a liberal arts college for Black women that was founded in 1881. Voting rights activist and founder of Fair Fight Action, Stacey Abrams, is a graduate of Spelman college.

Clark Atlanta University: Initially founded as Atlanta University in 1865, Clark Atlanta University was the first HBCU in the Southern United States. Atlanta University merged with Clark College in 1988 to form Clark Atlanta University. Along with Spelman and Morehouse Colleges they are members of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) consortium.

Atlanta Georgia Black History Month-Restaurants:

Paschal’s: Paschal’s was founded as a small sandwich shop by 2 brothers in 1947. The specialty was a fried chicken sandwich. In 1959 it became a brick and mortar on what is now known as Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The restaurant is known for soul food specialties like fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread and peach cobbler. During the 1960’s it was the unofficial headquarters for the civil rights movement. Leaders of of the movement frequently met there for strategy sessions. It was also the site for voter registration drives and a safe haven for Black activists released from jail. The restaurant owners posted bond and served free meals to civil rights activists.

Busy Bee Café: The original Busy Bee was founded in 1947 by Lucy Jackson- a self taught cook. She ran the business for two decades. Busy Bee is known for mouth watering soul food like oven roasted chicken & cornbread dressing, macaroni and cheese, chicken and waffles, BBQ ribs and sweet potato pie.

Black History Month Activities For Children:

Center for Puppetry Arts: Enjoy these virtual events:”Stories of Color” explores the African Diaspora. Younger kids will enjoy “Anansi the Spider: A West African Folktale”.

Children’s Museum of Atlanta: The museum will have hands-on science activities, art and real-life story telling during the month of February.

Brave & Kind Bookshop: A curated neighborhood bookshop in Decatur with creative workshops, story clubs and special gifts. They have a lot educational and inspirational books for Black children!

Things to do in Atlanta Georgia-Oakland Cemetery:

African American Burial Grounds Tour: This may seem like a bazaar recommendation but this is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I have been to. Walking tours in the cemetery show the final resting place of Atlanta pioneers including William Finch Maynard Jackson and Carrie Steele Logan.

  • Let’s Normalize Getting Rest!!!
Right @tomiko.harvey ?!!!
It’s OK to take a break once in awhile and give your body, your mind & your soul a break! I have to even remind myself of this! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I am the ultimate multitasker. Ask my husband @parrishu70 lol 😆

I like to keep busy especially now that I’m not traveling 🧳
But my brain 🧠 literally gets exhausted and I’m on the computer or my phone 📱ALL Day!!

That’s why my recent staycation @canopyatlantamidtown was so awesome. I actually put on pajamas and opened magazines for the first time in ages!! And their canopy bed was so comfy!!!

If you are looking for staycation ideas in Atlanta or in your own neighborhood, head to the “latest blog posts” link in my profile and check out my post on Canopy Atlanta Midtown. @canopybyhilton has locations all across the US that cater to that local city 🌃 which is very cool!! Have you stayed at a Canopy 🏨?

  • #WineWednesday What a beautiful sight! 🍷🍷🍷😍😍😋😋

Let’s talk about allyship for a sec. What does it mean to you? Have you seen true examples of this in the past year? I know this word has been overused and beaten into the ground since last year followed up by being a “performative ally”. But when I see someone making an effort and doing something to make a difference, it’s worth applauding. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

A fellow @oprahmagazine Insider told me about Master Sommelier @andrearobinsonms because she was awarding scholarships for her virtual “Great Wine Made Simple” course to women and BIPOC wine students & enthusiasts interested in furthering their wine studies. She thought I would be interested in applying. I did. Andrea reached out & asked me to take the class but play a supporting role based on my previous experience as a wine blogger, author & WSET Level 2 wine certification! I was honored. The class has been very informative interactive & fun!

Andrea has picked stellar wine professionals as mentors for the scholarship students taking this course. They are from all different backgrounds & experiences across all niches in the wine industry. I am sure they are having an amazing experience!!!! This is what being an ally looks like. Using your privilege, connections, and experience to open doors and provide opportunities for others. The wine industry, like so many other industries, is lacking and needs more Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. So Thank You.

Oh back to the pic. This was just 1 delivery 🚚 📦 for the course filled w wines from Italy, Spain & Germany! 😋😋😋

  • #DopeBlackDoctor #IssaMood
Happy Monday Everyone! I’m trying to go into the week, the last week of Black History, with this mood and attitude! 👏🏽

You may have seen my post on National Women’s Physician Day that only 2% of all Physicians are Black women. We are truly unicorns and I stand proud to represent this profession and to make my ancestors proud 🩺

So let me tell you what breaks my heart 💔. That after 25 years of being a M.D.-medical doctor and actually practicing medicine and seeing patients for 25 years!!!, I’m still constantly questioned by people who aren’t even in the science or medical field 🤔🤔
Could it be because I’m female? Black? Both? 😡🤬

Ever since this pandemic started I have been on top of it. My first blog post on COVID19 went viral and I appeared on @cnn I did countless webinars and podcasts informing and educating the public including the travel community. This year I published an article on the COVID19 vaccines 💉 and shared my experience receiving the vaccine on social media. But STILL when I simply comment on a thread on social media as a medical expert to correct misinformation I face backlash and MEAN comments! Even in predominantly Black travel groups. It’s exhausting. I had to take a break. I tried again today and the person deleted the thread. I’m at a loss. People do not want to be informed. I don’t get it.

But I will hold my head up high. I went into this profession to serve. For those who are still having doubts about the vaccines 💉 please read my article-“7 Compelling Reasons to take a COVID19 Vaccine” which includes summaries of the vaccines & research studies. The link is in my profile. Happy to answer any questions. Stay safe everyone!

  • It’s going to be an exciting weekend of wine!!! 🍷🍷🍷
I’m celebrating Black winemakers this weekend by attending the first annual International Winemakers Summit being held by @urban_connoisseurs and @uncorkedandcultured
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

When I first started my blog over 6 years ago I always had a WINE section. I have also always supported and blogged about Black-owned wines and winemakers from @mcbridesisters @houseofmandela early on to 5 1/2 years ago when I had the pleasure of visiting the first Black-owned winery in Napa Valley @brownestate during my Bachelorette weekend
A year later I stopped by @rideauvineyard in Santa Ynez Valley, had a blog post on a Black History month Black-owned wine tasting go viral, met Andre Hueston Mack of @maisonnoirwines here in Atlanta then did a road trip a few years ago to the PNW and stopped by @frichettewinery and @abbeycreekwine the first “hip hop winery” in the PNW.

All of this inspired me to curate a list last year of over 45 Black-owned wineries, wine businesses, even podcasters..!! I also pursued & received my first wine certification last fall. WSET 2 with distinction 👏🏽👏🏽🍾🍾

It will be a pleasure to listen & learn from these trailblazers this weekend and be able to show continued support. Head to the link in my profile to read my blog post and to @urban_connoisseurs to register for the conference this weekend!

  • Since it’s #nationaldrinkwineday I thought I would share a few pics of one of my favorite wine 🍷 tours and wine areas that I visited in 2019. That was such an amazing year of travel!!!

PORTO in Portugal 🇵🇹 was amazing! It’s the home of Port wine and even if you are not a fan or don’t think you are a fan of fortified or sweeter wines you have to try them if you visit the area. They have all different styles including white port.

We did a tour @taylorsportwine which has a self-guided walking tour of the history of port wine making, Porto, the Douro Valley and port wine trading. It was very interesting. And swipe to see the pic of my forever POTUS President Obama!
Taylor’s port is available in the US so you may have tried it.

Have you been to Porto or tried port wine?
