Music lovers! Do you crave really good music? Quality rhythms and lyrics that last a lifetime? I call this “Grown Folks Music”! According to my guest blogger J.Tippens, R&B and Jazz musicians Jonathan Butler, Najee & Chaka Khan deliver live in concert. Read her review here!
From J.Tippens:
As a true music lover, I have seen countless acts in concert over the years, some several times over. However , these days I am a bit more selective about whom I spend my hard earned dollars to see. I prefer more seasoned artists- those who sound as good or better live as over the airwaves and who don’t need digital altering. I want to see singers who can SANG, and musicians who can PLAY. Artists that can hold their own, no dancers, fans or fog machines needed. Effects can be nice but real musicians don’t need them. All they really need is a stage and a microphone. This is the kind of musical artist I like to see. Recently, I have had the chance to see three.
The South African singer, songwriter and guitarist has a career that has spanned over 40 years. Though he performs gospel as well, he is best known for his jazz and R&B hits. Some of his more popular songs over the years have been, “Lies,” “Take Good Care Of Me,” and “Sarah, Sarah.” His recent performance included past hits like these as well as new music from his latest CD, “Living My Dream.” Whether he is belting out the title track from this new CD, or oohing and aahing the crowd with a soothing instrumental, Jonathan Butler never fails to disappoint. He puts his heart and soul into each song. I hated for the show to end. He has such a repertoire that he could have gone on for hours. Seeing him is always a treat. Jonathan Butler is the kind of artist I like to see.
Even if you don’t think you know Najee, you probably know Najee’s music. The Grammy nominated jazz saxophonist and flautist has collaborated with everyone from Prince to Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. From, “Sweet Love,” with Anita Baker, to “Have you ever loved somebody,” with Freddie Jackson, you know the sound. Najee’s trademark soprano saxophone sound led him to perform with many greats dating back to the 80’s. This led to Najee finding himself at the top of the charts. Experiencing Najee perform live is fantastic! I saw him at an intimate supper club where he wooed everyone with his sultry stylings from his 13 albums worth of smooth, soothing jazz. Najee is the kind of artist I like to see.
Just a few of her stats:
10 Grammy AWARDS
22 Albums
10 #1 Billboard Magazine Charted Songs
7 Gold Singles
10 Gold and Platinum Albums
Chaka Khan is hot! This legendary diva has got IT! A seasoned diva such as Chaka Khan takes the stage and owns it. Chaka dazzled us with ALL the hits, from 70s hits like, “Tell Me Something Good,” and “Once You Get Started,” to “Through the Fire,” to “I’m Every Woman”. After a 40 year career, her tremendous vocals are as fabulous as ever. She hits every wonderful note. The whole crowd was on their feet. No special effects needed here. Her performance was phenomenal, the kind that leaves you raving about it months later. Chaka Khan is every woman. She is the type of artist I like to see!

That is a great list Kay! I love them all!
I love Najee and of course Ms. Chaka Khan! I am so for grown folk music and must be getting old, because I find myself saying that the stuff I hear on the radio isn’t real music LOL.
Tyra-so much of it isnt! I like a variety but there is something about real R&B and Jazz that is just so beautiful!
Im such an old school music kind of girl. I appreciate my mom schooling me on good music. I hope my kids are taking notes too.
That is great about your Mom Michellette! I am sure the music your kids hear you listening to will resonate with them in the future.
