Welcome to another foodie post! As most of you know, when traveling I seek out local foods and wine. In May I visited Quebec City in Canada for the first time. Thanks to the Women in Travel Summit being held there, I finally made it to this part of the world. One of many great things about this conference is the opportunity to explore local foods, drinks, art and even architecture. Since I only had one day available to do a tour, I picked the “Saint-Roch Food Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour.” This tour was a Quebec City Food Tour (brand) and it was amazing. Before I tell you about the walking food tour, here is some information on Quebec City and the Saint-Roch neighborhood. For more facts about Quebec City, visit this post.
Quebec City is the capital city of the Quebec Province in Canada.
It is the second largest city in the province after Montreal. It is a French speaking province although I found residents to be bilingual in French and English. Notable landmarks in the city include Old Quebec, Chateau Frontenac and the Citadelle of Quebec.
The Saint-Roch neighborhood used to be a working class neighborhood.
It was actually considered the poorest area in Quebec City. However, since the year 2000, millions and millions of dollars have gone into renovating this neighborhood. Saint-Roch is now home to artists, students and IT workers. Rue Saint-Joseph is filled with trendy shops and restaurants. Quebec City Food Tours is focused on providing an “off the beaten path” experience. Their tour guides are locals which allows for a more authentic experience. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the area. Along the tour she stopped and pointed out local landmarks and discussed the history of the neighborhood. We leisurely strolled through the Saint-Roch neighborhood sampling local foods and drinks. I truly enjoy eating where the locals eat. Don’t you?
So what did we eat during the Saint-Roch walking food tour? We made 6 delicious stops along our food tour.
Our Quebec City Food Tour:
Stop #1 Fromagerie Des Grondines: I really thought I had died on gone to heaven after visiting this cheese shop. If you love cheese as much as I do you will be salivating. First we were served a charcuterie board with 2 different cheeses and a fruit juice. Then came the decadent grilled ham and cheese sandwiches. They were so good!
Stop #2 Ness Restaurant Sante: Next up at Ness we sampled raw avocado lime pie. We were not told what it was until after eating. That was probably a good thing for most people (lol) It was actually smooth and quite tasty. I love avocado but this was my first time having it as a pie. Vegans will enjoy this restaurant.
Stop #3 Noctem Artisans Brasseurs: Our third stop was at a craft brewery and restaurant. We were served craft beer and ceviche. I am more of a wine drinker but I was told by fellow attendees that is was good.
Stop #4 Camellia Sinensis: This is a very quaint tea shop in Quebec City. We had the opportunity to try Labrador tea which was delicious.
Stop #5 Chez Ashton: I was pleasantly surprised that poutine was included in this Quebec City food tour. I had never had it but I knew I was not leaving Quebec City without trying it. Poutine originated in Quebec. Chez Ashton was the first place in the area that served it to customers. So what is poutine? Imagine French fries covered with gravy and topped with squeaky cheese curds. People usually either love it or hate it. I liked it. (lol) I was surprised that the gravy did not make the French fries soggy. It was quite flavorful and reminded me of comfort food.
Stop #6 Champagne Chocolatier: Our final stop on the Saint-Roch walking food tour was perfect. The name of the store contains two of my favorite things-Champagne and Chocolate:-) We sampled raspberry chocolate truffles which created a pop of flavor in my mouth. Their hot chocolate was recommended and comes in milk chocolate or dark chocolate. I went with the milk chocolate. Although it was sweet it may be the best hot chocolate I have ever had.
I had such a great time on the Saint-Roch Walking Food Tour in Quebec City. I enjoyed learning about the area and eating local cuisine. I highly recommend using Quebec City Food Tours when visiting that area. If you’re planning to do tours of any kind in Quebec, booking through Viator right now can save 50% of the tour cost, fyi!
So, have you been to Quebec City? Did you enjoy a Quebec City Food tour while you were there?
